Have you noticed this big push on S.T.E.M recently? Basically it’s a call for Americans to increase the passion and excitement in our children for pursuing studies in the areas of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). Teach a child to enjoy these technological sectors and make Americans more competitive in a fast-paced global workforce.
Thanks to their Daddy and Uncle Bob, my girls don’t suffer from a lack of techie-type toys here. We’re definitely in the technologically-savvy camp where we allow our children access to things like computers, iPads, and laptops {albeit limited access}. But cultivating a love of STEM in your children will require more than just a few fancy apps and computer games. Luckily, folks out there are stepping up to the plate and creating new and innovative ways to open up the world of STEM to younger and younger minds.
One such company recently contacted me and asked if I would review their latest project, the Project Genius Light.
The folks at EEME created this kit (and are planning to create many more DIY projects) so that both parents and children can learn from, and collaborate on, STEM educational projects together. Their Project Genius Light is a perfect beginner introduction to the world of electronics and technology.
What you learn
How do you assemble a circuit?
What is a breadboard?
How does a battery work?
What is resistance?
What do jump wires do?
… And more!
The recommended ages for this project are 7-12 but Mira (at age 6) was able to follow along and work through the online video lessons with me without any problems.
Even Lyra’s interest was piqued as she kept popping up and trying to watch the videos with us.
There are some pretty tiny pieces to work with, so I eventually had to distract my younger children with a cartoon in another room. Without sibling interruptions, Mira was easily able to follow along with the detailed (yet short) instructional videos. And even better– I was able to follow along and make sense of what we were doing.
A light bulb went on for both of us. Literally and figuratively.
An educational kit that bolsters confidence and awareness in children for STEM subjects?? Now that’s a bright idea!

Thanks for this wonderful giveaway!
Such a cool way to learn science.
Thanks for posting this! My husband works in computers so the girls were “helping” him install memory in their laptop last night and building robots with him last week. This looks like a great activity for them!
This looks so cool!
Oh my goodness that looks like fun! I’ve never heard of this company but I will remember them when my girls are older.
I have three kids who love the STEM subjects. This would be totally awesome!! Thanks for the giveaway.
We love science! ♥
