We’ve been having fun playing around with our Cuisenaire Rods before starting out with our Miquon curriculum.
The other day I witnessed Mira using two orange rods as tweezers to pick up the smaller rods. She was struggling to get the longer rods to work as a tool, and before I could comment Mira sighed and said, “Mommy can I play with my chopsticks with the rods?”
And Voilà! a new game was born.
It wasn’t long before Stella wanted in on the action.
Now whenever we take out our rods the girls run to grab their chopsticks from the silverware drawer. You can find children’s training chopsticks online here or, if you have a local Asian market, check to see if they carry them there.
Looks like these chopsticks will be a recurring aide to our math activities. And as an added bonus, I’m hoping Korean night dinners will become less messy.

Wow! Now they are learning math and practical life skills at the same time. I don’t know if you realize it, but you are borderline Montessori at this point.
Looks like they are having fun and learning wonderful things at the same time.
You’re right Lori!
I was a substitute teacher at a local Montessori school for a short amount of time after my first daughter was born. In order to teach there I had to take a bunch of teaching classes on the Montessori philosophy. It gave me a nice insight into their activities and I like implementing them into my homeschool when possible.
